Not every UAE business needs to register for VAT โ but plenty that don't need to, choose to anyway. Here's how the thresholds work, and what actually happens once you register.
The two thresholds
| Threshold | Amount | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Mandatory registration | AED 375,000 | You must register |
| Voluntary registration | AED 187,500 | You may choose to register |
Both thresholds are measured against your taxable supplies and imports โ not profit โ over either the previous 12 months, or the anticipated next 30 days. If either measurement crosses AED 375,000, registration becomes mandatory regardless of which period triggered it.
Why register voluntarily below the mandatory line
A business between AED 187,500 and AED 375,000 in taxable supplies isn't required to register, but often benefits from doing so anyway โ mainly to reclaim input VAT paid on business expenses and startup costs. A new business with significant upfront costs and modest early revenue is the classic case where voluntary registration makes financial sense before mandatory registration would otherwise kick in.
Documents you'll need
- Trade licence copy
- Emirates ID and passport copies of the owner(s)/authorized signatory
- Memorandum of Association (or equivalent constitutional document)
- Details of business activities and expected turnover
- Bank account details (IBAN)
- Financial records supporting your turnover calculation (invoices, contracts, or financial statements)
How to register: step by step
Create an EmaraTax account
Registration is handled through the Federal Tax Authority's EmaraTax portal. If you already have a UAE Pass, you can use it to log in directly.
Complete the VAT registration application
Enter your business details, activities, expected turnover, and banking information, then upload the required supporting documents.
Submit and wait for review
The FTA reviews applications and may request additional documents or clarification before approving. Processing typically takes a few weeks, though it can be faster or slower depending on the completeness of your submission.
Receive your Tax Registration Number (TRN)
Once approved, you'll receive a TRN โ this must appear on all your tax invoices from that point forward, and you're now required to charge 5% VAT on taxable supplies and file periodic VAT returns.
Already registered? Calculate VAT on your invoices.
Use the VAT Calculator โTax groups: registering multiple related entities together
Two or more related UAE businesses under common ownership or control can apply to register as a single VAT group, filing one combined return instead of separate returns for each entity. This can simplify compliance for group structures, though it also means all entities in the group share joint liability for the group's VAT obligations.
What happens if you're late to register
Failing to register once you've crossed the mandatory threshold carries administrative penalties from the FTA, calculated based on how late the registration is. If you realize you should have registered earlier, it's generally far better to register immediately and address the compliance gap than to keep delaying.
VAT registration thresholds and penalty amounts are set by UAE federal law and can be updated. Confirm current figures on the Federal Tax Authority's EmaraTax portal before registering.
