Why Tax Deadlines Differ So Much Between Countries

It's tempting to assume every country runs on the same calendar-year cycle the way the US, Canada, UAE, and Singapore broadly do — but several major economies deliberately use a different tax year entirely:

CountryTax YearMain Individual Filing Deadline
🇮🇳 India1 April – 31 March31 July (non-audit cases)
🇺🇸 USA1 January – 31 December15 April
🇬🇧 UK6 April – 5 April31 January (online)
🇨🇦 Canada1 January – 31 December30 April
🇦🇪 UAENo personal income taxNot applicable for individuals
🇦🇺 Australia1 July – 30 June31 October (self-lodgers)
🇸🇬 Singapore1 January – 31 December15 April

India and Australia's April-to-March and July-to-June tax years both trace back to British colonial-era administrative calendars, still in use today. The UK's unusual 6 April start date is a historical artifact of the switch from the Julian to Gregorian calendar in 1752 — genuinely one of the odder quirks in global tax administration.

How to Use This Calendar

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do tax deadlines differ so much between countries?+
Each country sets its own tax year and administrative calendar independently. India and Australia use a financial year running April to March or July to June, the UK runs April to April, while the US, Canada, UAE, and Singapore tax individuals on a calendar year — leading to genuinely different filing windows.
Do tax deadlines ever get extended?+
Yes, in several countries — notably India, where the CBDT has extended the ITR deadline in multiple recent years. Extensions are typically announced close to the original date and should never be assumed in advance.
Which country has the most complex tax calendar?+
India and the US arguably have the most moving parts for individuals, due to advance tax/estimated tax instalment systems running alongside the main filing deadline. The UAE has the least fixed structure, since Corporate Tax deadlines depend entirely on each business's own financial year.
VERIFY DATES

Deadlines shift when they fall on a weekend or public holiday, and can be revised by each country's tax authority — extensions, especially, are common and vary year to year. This calendar reflects our best understanding as of the review date. Always confirm the exact current date on the official tax authority website linked above before relying on it.
