A practical walkthrough of filing your Income Tax Return online, from gathering documents to e-verification.
Cross-check every income entry in AIS against what you're about to declare. Mismatches here are the most common trigger for a notice โ see our ITR filing mistakes guide.
Compare Old vs New Regime using your actual numbers โ don't assume. See our Income Tax Calculator.
See our ITR Forms guide โ filing the wrong form makes your return invalid.
Log in to the official Income Tax e-filing portal using your PAN. Most salaried filers can use the pre-filled data (from Form 16, 26AS, and AIS) and just verify it's accurate before submitting.
Review the computed tax, deductions, and refund/payable amount. If tax is due, pay it before submitting.
Your ITR isn't considered filed until it's verified โ usually done instantly via Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or a few other methods. Without verification (within 30 days), your return is treated as not filed.
Check your key filing dates before you start.
See ITR Due Dates โThis is a general walkthrough, not a substitute for the official e-filing portal's instructions. For complex situations (business income, foreign assets, capital gains), consider consulting a CA.
