Superannuation is Australia's compulsory retirement savings system โ a portion of your income is paid into a fund you can't access until retirement.
Employers must contribute 12% of your ordinary time earnings into your chosen super fund โ this reached its final legislated rate from 1 July 2025, up from a series of gradual annual increases.
Total concessional (pre-tax) contributions โ including employer SG, salary sacrifice, and personal deductible contributions โ are capped at $30,000/year. Contributions in this cap are taxed at 15% within the fund, generally lower than most people's marginal tax rate.
You can ask your employer to redirect part of your pre-tax salary into super. This reduces your taxable income now while building retirement savings, taxed at the concessional 15% rate instead of your marginal rate.
Generally, you can't access super until you reach "preservation age" (currently 60) and retire, or meet another condition of release.
See your employer's Super Guarantee contribution.
