BPJS Explained: What Comes Off Your First Indonesian Payslip

Published 2 October 2026 · 5 min read · 🇮🇩 Indonesia

Your first Indonesian payslip will show a handful of deductions with acronyms — JHT, JP, BPJS Kes — plus PPh 21. Here is what each one is, using a Rp7,000,000 monthly salary as the example.

What comes off your salary

ItemAmount
Gross salaryRp7,000,000
JHT — old-age savings (2%)− Rp140,000
JP — pension (1%)− Rp70,000
BPJS Kesehatan — health (1%)− Rp70,000
PPh 21 (TER 1.25%, single)− Rp91,472
Take-home payRp6,628,528

What your employer pays on top

Your employer adds another Rp716,800 a month that you never see: Rp259,000 to your JHT, Rp140,000 to your JP, Rp280,000 for BPJS Kesehatan, and small premiums for work-accident (JKK) and death (JKM) cover. Some of this — the JKK, JKM and health premiums — is counted as your income for PPh 21, which is why the tax is worked out on Rp7,317,800 rather than Rp7,000,000.

What you get for it

Three things to check

  1. Download the JMO app and confirm your employer's contributions are actually arriving each month.
  2. Make sure your family members are registered on your BPJS Kesehatan card.
  3. If you earn more than Rp11,086,300, JP stops at Rp110,863; above Rp12 million, BPJS Kesehatan stops at Rp120,000. Bigger deductions mean a payroll error.

Frequently asked questions

How much BPJS is deducted from salary?

About 4% for most employees: 2% JHT, 1% JP and 1% BPJS Kesehatan, with caps on JP and Kesehatan for higher earners.

Can I get my BPJS money back when I quit?

Your JHT balance, yes — it can be claimed after resigning. JP becomes a lump sum or pension later, and Kesehatan is insurance, so it is not refundable.
