Tax rules change every year. These are the changes in 2026 most likely to affect the tax you pay in each country we cover.
Each country has its own forms and names for things, but most income tax systems are built from the same six ideas. Once you know them, any country's rules are much easier to follow.
Brackets tax slices of income, not all of it. Someone in England earning £60,000 is in the 40% band. Their total income tax is £11,432, which is 19.1% of their pay. The 40% applies only to the £9,730 above £50,270.
Use the marginal rate when you judge a pay rise or a deduction. Use the effective rate when you budget.
A deduction lowers your taxable income, so it saves you your marginal rate. A $10,000 RRSP contribution saves $2,965 in tax for someone on $85,000 in Ontario. A credit comes straight off the tax bill. Canada's federal basic personal amount of $16,452 is a 14% credit, worth about $2,303 to everyone.
A deduction is worth more the more you earn. A credit is worth the same at any income.
The UK gives a £12,570 personal allowance. Australia has an $18,200 tax-free threshold. Singapore taxes the first S$20,000 at 0%. The US gives a $16,100 standard deduction. India uses a rebate that wipes out tax on up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income.
The results look alike, but a rebate can vanish all at once when you pass its limit. An allowance tapers away gradually.
Employers deduct tax each payday. This is PAYE in the UK, TDS in India, PAYG in Australia, source deductions in Canada and W-4 withholding in the US. It is based on assumptions about your year. Your return works out the real figure, and the difference becomes a refund or a bill.
Singapore is different: residents have no withholding on salary and pay after they receive their Notice of Assessment.
Salary, interest, dividends and capital gains are often taxed at different rates. In India, gains on shares held more than 12 months are taxed at 12.5% on the amount above ₹1.25 lakh. In the UK, dividends have their own 10.75% and 35.75% rates.
Enter each type of income separately in a calculator. Adding them together first can overstate your tax.
Tax residency is usually based on days spent in a country or where your home is. It is not based on citizenship, except in the US, which taxes its citizens wherever they live. In Singapore, someone on S$96,000 with CPF relief pays S$3,056 as a resident, but S$14,400 as a non-resident.
If you moved countries during the year, work out your residency before anything else.
In most cases, earning a little more only means paying a little more tax. But each of these rules can cost far more than the headline rate suggests. All figures come from our 2026 calculators.
Every one of our calculators follows these steps. Knowing them helps you check any result, whether it comes from us, your payroll software or your accountant.
Sam earns a £45,000 salary, £2,000 of interest and £3,000 of dividends. After his £12,570 personal allowance, his salary tax is £6,486. His £1,000 personal savings allowance covers half the interest, and the other £1,000 is taxed at 20%: £200. The £500 dividend allowance covers part of the dividends, and the remaining £2,500 is taxed at 10.75%: £268.75. His total income tax is £6,954.75. If you added everything together and taxed it as salary, you would get £7,486, which is about £531 too much.
Choose from 8 countries, each built around how that country's tax system actually works — regimes, brackets, federal vs. state, whatever applies.
Plug in your income, deductions, or relevant details into the calculator. Nothing is saved, tracked, or emailed — the calculation happens right in your browser.
See exactly how the number breaks down — bracket by bracket — plus links to related guides if you want the full context before filing.
Each country's calculators are built around its actual tax structure — India's Old vs New Regime, the UK's National Insurance, Canada's CPP/EI, Singapore's CPF — not a generic formula reused everywhere.
Every calculator and guide is free to use, with no account, no email capture, and no artificial limit on how many times you use it.
Every page shows the tax year or Year of Assessment it reflects, along with a last-reviewed date, so you know exactly how current the figures are.
Results show the full breakdown — which bracket applied, what got deducted, what the effective rate works out to — instead of just a single final number.

Yes. Rates are reviewed country by country for the current tax year: FY 2026-27 in India, 2026 in the USA, Canada, Singapore and Indonesia, 2026/27 in the UK and 2026-27 in Australia. Each page shows the tax year it covers and when it was last updated.
Your marginal rate is the tax on your next unit of income. Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your total income. In England, someone earning £60,000 has a 40% marginal rate but pays £11,432 in income tax, an effective rate of 19.1%. Use the marginal rate to judge a raise or a deduction, and the effective rate for budgeting.
It depends on your income. A deduction reduces taxable income, so it saves tax at your marginal rate and is worth more to higher earners. A credit comes directly off your tax bill and is worth the same to everyone who can use it. For example, Canada's $16,452 federal basic personal amount is a 14% credit worth about $2,303.
Under ordinary tax brackets, no: only the extra income is taxed at the higher rate. Cliffs are the exception. In India, crossing ₹12 lakh of total income through capital gains removes the whole rebate. In the UK, income between £100,000 and £125,140 is taxed at an effective 60%, and tax-free childcare stops completely at £100,000.
Under the new tax regime for FY 2026-27, yes. The Section 87A rebate of up to ₹60,000 brings tax to zero on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh, or about ₹12.75 lakh of salary after the ₹75,000 standard deduction. The rebate doesn't cover income taxed at special rates, such as capital gains on shares. Budget 2026 left the slabs unchanged.
